On Sunday, September 26, we opened our doors an extra evening for some wine-loving guests. We also opened a series of unique bottles. These cherished wines had been waiting in our cellar for a while to be chosen by that one true wine lover. Now the time had come. Some of the bottles we chose were not on the regular wine list but came from our private collection. Sharing special bottles is part of the pleasure of the job of the sommelier. We feel it is a privilege to be able to share our wines in this way.
A small impression
The evening started well with Champagne Jacquesson 742 and Petit Chablis by Raveneau. Domaine Francois Raveneau is the leading winery of Chablis. His wines are highly sought after and even the Petit Chablis shows pure beauty and depth. In its modest form, a perfect Chardonnay.
The Paul Pernot Batard Montrachet Grand Cru was a very special glass. Creamy and delicious to drink for its 25 years young, but a good white Burgundy can age for decades and become more interesting in due time. This bottle was a great example of this theory. Beaucastel Blanc 2009 was indulging and could even have improved in time, but we just couldn’t resist anymore and popped it for this special occasion. A nice observation: even an underdog like Schnaittmann’s Lemberger was able to charm the guests – a great achievement among all those famous producers and appellations.
I was also delighted with the top condition of the Zilleken Spätelese Rausch 2003, which still tasted so fresh and crisp. Delicious! It marked the evening – all the bottles were in very good condition and some bottles were even memorable!
